HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Gayle Wheatley, Colored Pencil on Paper
This week’s Illustration Friday challenge was to illustrate the topic LATE. There is a contemporary cafe in Rome with a full wall of sculptures positioned behind the tables for ambiance. I’m sure this is nothing special to Romans, but of course for someone from LA, where things are mostly all modern, stunning details like this conjure up a dreamy sense of history. I wanted this composition to feel as if it was pulled from an ancient Roman night, or better yet, maybe a dream involving Michelangelo.
So for the topic LATE, I thought of dozing Roman sculptures under a big Italian moon.
LA has been burning this week, which also means out of the destruction emerge the most spectacular sunsets…all the junk in the atmosphere is making our sunsets over the ocean look like paintings with cotton candy clouds and liquid mercury waves. I shot these in Marina del Rey:

I’ve been engrossed in this painting for a month now, which is a little uncharacteristic of me, but it’s been evolving. Here are a couple more detail shots of the changing landscape…

Just returned from Sin City, from a lovely few days of luxurious indulgence. Afternoons were spent lounging poolside and succumbing to daily shopping frenzies. Food consisted of celebrity chef specialties, fancy cocktails, and beautiful sweet treats that made my stomach jut out unfavorably. Nights were glittery and magical, and I finally caught “O” which was mind-blowing. I had to keep reminding myself to close my mouth, which hung open in amazement practically the entire show! Here are a few images from the trip:
