Malibu Artist Reception! art exhibits art
My Iceland Abstracted paintings at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art

This years art exhibit was a big success! Got to show a collection of my watercolors from Iceland, along with the poems they were based on. It was my first time exhibiting poetry, which was a little intimidating, but the outcome was extremely rewarding! Keep your eyes peeled for my book with the full collection of my Iceland Abstracted paintings and poems, coming out later this year. Much thanks to all those who made the trip out to Malibu!! -Gayle

Upcoming Art Exhibit at the Weisman Museum, Malibu art exhibits art
This year I’m exhibiting 15 watercolor paintings along with the poems they were based on. The paintings were chosen from a collection of about 35 watercolors from my Iceland Abstracted series which encompasses poetry and painting. The work was done mostly in the field in moleskine journals—on location in Iceland. If you have the chance, come on out to the museum!

Beautiful Grim Concept #3: Breathing Underwater art exhibits art

“Breathing Underwater,” Oil on Canvas, 12″ x 9″

So, in a burst of inspiration, (and in a complete departure from my previous two concepts!) I finally came up with this finalized painting for the Beautiful Grim breast cancer charity art auction that harkens back to my bubble girl paintings: explorations of otherworldly environments where symbolic elements such as oxygen and water compete for sustenance.

The deadline is TODAY and I finally got the whole thing finished and turned in. Whew! It was getting down to the last minute there!

Adorned with a melting crown of textured coral that threatens to drip and tragically melt everything along with it, stands my “Beautiful Grim,” a remarkably strong and beautiful woman who has learned to breathe underwater against all odds in order to survive. Wearing a glass explorer’s bubble, her face is defiantly immersed in an oceanic microcosm full of fish.

Just realized this is the first OIL PAINTING that I’ve completed in 2010, as well as the first oil on canvas I’ve painted in about 8 months! (which is quite shocking for me as I’ve been paining in oils obsessively through the last decade and beyond.) Ever since my trip to Iceland 8 months ago, I have been experimenting with painting primarily in watercolors. Hadn’t realized it had been so long since I’d painted in oil!

Here’s an excerpt about me from the artist’s catalog that was published for the exhibition:

“Since my art is heavily influenced by the
destinations I’ve traveled to, my paintings are
filled with cultural references that are combined
to form a rich visual language. Additionally,
inspired by the years I spent in Japan, my compositions and line
work reflect the influence of ukiyo-e, while conceptually exploring the
relationship between unique distinctions and the ordinary.”
