The America’s Cup is going on all summer in San Francisco and this was sketched in a newly opened park along the Embarcadero right next to the base of the Italian camp (hence the Italian flag and Luna Rossa tents).

Last weekend close to 100 of us urban sketchers gathered for the first annual west coast urban sketch crawl. (Read more about Urban Sketching in my interview with Gabriel Campanario, founder of sorts, of the movement.) It was my first sketch crawl, and I must say I really enjoyed it. Here are snippets from the day:

Magnolia Pod!

Magnolia Pod! art

This year’s Thanksgiving table was adorned with fall plants from the garden, which included persimmons, mini-pomegranates, pine cones, green shrub branches, brilliantly-colored leaves, and magnolia pods. I was fascinated by these pods, when a couple days after Thanksgiving, they began to open and all these crazy red seeds (berries?) started popping out. The coolest thing was that they would start out dangling from spider-web-thin white strings, which would later break and spill them onto the table. Isn’t nature enchanting?

This year I’m exhibiting 15 watercolor paintings along with the poems they were based on. The paintings were chosen from a collection of about 35 watercolors from my Iceland Abstracted series which encompasses poetry and painting. The work was done mostly in the field in moleskine journals—on location in Iceland. If you have the chance, come on out to the museum!

As of late, I’ve found myself shooting more and more photography. Up until now, this blog has featured primarily oil paintings, then both paintings and illustrations, and now I’ll be expanding that to include photography. This was shot near Venice Beach, California. -G
